Electronics Recycling

There are a number of options if you have unusable or outdated electronics need to discard. Many items are accepted free of charge through the Ontario Electronics Stewardship Program. Other items may be accepted at some locations, but you will pay a fee, usually by weight, e.g. for microwave ovens.

Registered collection operators are currently accepting Phase 1 and 2 materials free of charge.

Phase 1 Materials: desktop computers, portable computers, computer peripherals (keyboards, mice, drives, parts), printers, monitors and televisions.

Phase 2 Materials will be collected effective April 1, 2010: amplifiers, audio visual players, camera, cell phones, computers and peripherals, copiers, digital cameras, fax machines, monitors, pagers and PDAs, printers, radios, receivers, scanners, speakers, telephones and answering machines, tuners, turntables, televisions and video projectors.

Cell Phones, Inkjet Printer and Toner Cartridges

Recycling

REAL provides a ThinkRecycle drop box at the REAL Deal Store for the collection of used cell phones, inkjet printer cartridges and toner cartridges. Using this service ensures these items are recycled responsibly.

Materials collected are directed to Lombardy Public School, who submits them to ThinkRecycle along with what they have collected as a fundraiser. They earn a set amount for specific makes of phones or cartridges.

Reusing Print Cartridges

Please note that many ink jet, laser and toner cartridges can be refilled, which will conserve resources, redirect waste from landfill, and save you money. Before you buy a new printer, make sure that the ink cartridge can be refilled.
