Athens
Garbage
Residents within the limits of the Village of Athens are provided with curbside pick-up of refuse and recyclables. Refuse is collected every Thrusday. All bags of refuse must have a Township of Athens garbage bag tag securely affixed to the bag and weigh no more than 50lbs.
The Township operates a landfill site on Montgomery Road. Directions: Take County Rd 40 (Charleston Lake Rd) towards Charleston Village until you reach County Park Road, turn left, Montgomery Road is the next left, the transfer station is on the right.
Hours of Operation:
January - December: Wednesday & Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
July & August: Mondays 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon (June 28 - August 30, 2010)
Landfill Site Tickets and Garbage Bag Tags are available at D. G. Blanchard’s Garage, Lake Line Lodge Marina, Swan’s Gift & Variety, and the Municipal Office.
Bag tags are $ 1.00 each (available in sheets of 5 and 10)
Garbage Bag Tags Only: Athens Freshmart, Dockside Restaurant, Elgin St. Garage, Lainee's Convenience

Items such as brush, wood, recyclables, stone, concrete, ash, leaves, metal, appliances (not fridges, freezers and air conditioners) are still accepted at no charge but do require a Landfill Site Ticket available at the locations listed above.
Recycling
Recycling pickup is Thursday on a two week cycle.
- One week fibres will be collected.
- The next week the containers will be collected.

Fibres include:
- newspapers and flyers (glossy or plain)
- fine paper (writing, computer or mail)
- boxboad
- magazines, catalogues and phone books
- corrugated cardboard - flattened in box or bundled
Container recycling:
- metal food and beverage cans
- plastics number 1 through 7
- windshield washer, vinegard, shampoo and lotion bottles
- aluminum pie plates, foil, rigid foil containers and trays
- glass food and beverage bottles and jars (in plastic bag beside box)
Not accepted:
- Milk cartons and anything with a wax coating
- Styrofoam .
Blue Boxes are available for purchase at the Municipal Office at a cost of $6.00.
Hazardous Waste
Annual County Hazardous Waste Day will be August 21, 2010.
Composting
Composters are available for purchase at the Municipal Office at a cost of $30.00.
