Municipal Waste Options

Edwardsburgh - Cardinal

Garbage

The Township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal has weekly curbside garbage collection and biweekly curbside recycling collection. Please see website for collection days and times.

Household trash must be bagged in special clear Township garbage bags. These bags cost $12.50 for a package of ten bags and are available at:

Cardinal: Burhcell's Home Hardware, Mac's Convenience, General Dollar, Madamacs Furniture

Johnstown: Bayview Convenience

Spencerville: Municipal Office, Drummond's Fuels, Myles' Discount, Spencerville Home Hardware, Village Pantry

Residents are permitted to put out up to ten bags of garbage per week, with the weight of each bag limited to 40 lbs.

Large Items. The municipality owns and operates a small landfill site located at 1225 Scott Road, just north of Cardinal west of County Road 22. The site is open Saturday mornings, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to allow disposal of large items that cannot be placed at curbside. Tipping fees apply as follows:

  • Furniture, carpeting, or white goods (appliances): $10.00 each
  • ½ ton truck load of miscellaneous personal items: $20.00 each
  • Yard waste and brush $5.00 per truck or trailer load.

Large scrap metal items may be disposed of in a recycling pile at no charge.

Hazardous Waste

A Household Hazardous Waste Day is held once a year and sponsored by the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, usually in late August.

Recycling

The Township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal has a curbside recycling program. Recyclable products are divided into two types - "green" box and "blue" box. Recyclables are collected on alternating weeks between "green" and "blue". Please see website for schedules.

Green Box recyclables include:

  • Boxboard
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Newspapers, flyers and phone books
  • Magazines and catalogues
  • Fine paper (writing, computer)

Blue Box recyclables include:

  • plastics marked with recycling symbol
  • Metal and Aluminum Cans
  • Aluminum trays and foil
  • Glass bottles and jars

DO NOT recycle:

  • plastic bags
  • waxed or coated boxes
  • hardcover books
  • cermamics and pottery
  • styrofoam
  • mirrors, light bulbs, Pyrex, drinking glasses
  • herbicide/pesticide bottles
  • car fluid bottles
  • aerosol or paint cans
  • metal pots
  • foil with paper

Blue and green boxes can be purchased from the municipal office in Spencerville and at the Cardinal Library. However, the contractor will pick items up from any container (except a bag) so long as the content is correct.

Large scrap metal items may be disposed of at no charge in a recycling pile at the landfill.

Compost

Yard and brush waste can be deposited at the landfill site at $5.00 per truck or trailer load.
