Municipal Waste Options

Mississippi Mills

Garbage

Mississippi Mills has a curbside garbage pickup program that allows residents to place tagged bags/containers of refuse out each week. Bag Tag allotments run from September 1 to August 31 yearly. Yearly allotments are mailed mid August.

Additional options:

1. Landfill Site and Depot. Mississippi Mills operates a landfill site just outside of Almonte and a depot near Pakenham. The Howie Road Landfill is located at 1470 Howie Road off March Road and the Pakenham depot is located at 580 Barr Side Road.

2. Exchange Day. The Town organizes an annul Exchange Day the first week of May, just prior to Large Item Day. This is a day where residents of Mississippi Mills can put items out at the curb they no longer want and others can take the "treasures".

3. Large Item Day. The Town has an Large Item Day in the month of May (second Saturday of May) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drop off bins are be located at the Landfill Site on Howie Road, Pakenham Recycle Depot on Barr Side Road and the Union Hall Yard, corner of Wolfe Grove Road and Tatlock Road

Recycling

Curbside Blue Box Recycling is offered weekly. See the schedule. Additional recyclable materials are accepted at the depot.

Blue Box recyclables include:

  • Boxboard
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • #1 Plastic #2 Plastic
  • Metal and Aluminum Cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Aluminum trays and foil
  • Newspapers, magazines, and household paper.
  • Empty Aerosol and Paint Cans

Additional plastics can be taken to the recycle depots at Howie Road and Barr Side Road. See materials accepted.

Cardboard is accepted at these locations as well as at the Ramsay Garage, 3131 Old Perth Road.

Other Waste Options

The Waste Diversion Sub-Committee promotes the use of reusable bags, for groceries and other goods, in order to reduce the number of non-biodegradable plastic bags. Cotton shopping bags are available for $3.50 at the municipal office.

The Hub and Rebound are non-profit organizations that accept used items to be resold. Proceeds are donated back to the community through other non-profit organizations.

The Hub is a second-hand store located at 118 Mill Street, Almonte (256-5225). Run by volunteers, The Hub recycles clothing, kitchenware, shoes, sports equipment, books, toys and small appliances

The Rebound store accepts larger items such as furniture, appliance and building supplies. It is located at 2470 Ramsay Concession 8 (at the corner of the Clayton Road).

Composting

There is an annual spring and fall curbside leaf collection. Read more.

Residents are encouraged to backyard compost. You can either make your own composter or buy one commercially. See information on home composting.

Hazardous Waste

Residents may use the Household Hazardous Waste Depot that operates Saturday mornings in Carleton Place June through September.
