Municipal Waste Options

Township of Rideau Lakes

Garbage

Waste and recycling collection is provided to all households in the Township. Collection will occur on public roads. See the website for private road collection.

Pickup is for bagged household waste only. All bags must be tagged with a Rideau Lakes waste sticker and be in clear bags only. Residents will need to purchase their bag tags for $2.00 each in sheets of 10 at area outlets.

There is a two bag limit for pickup per week.

The Township operates one landfill/transfer station site in Portland (on Old Kingston Road).

Waste Site Hours:

Wednesdays 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. , Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Each household in the Township of Rideau Lakes is entitled to ONE Free Brush Coupon. This coupon allows you to take one load, no larger in volume than a ½ ton truck (without racks) of brush to the Portland Landfill site FREE of charge. Any additional brush will be charged at $21 truck load. Valid January 2, 2010 to December 29, 2010 at the Portland Landfill Site. Does not include large stumps (over 60 cm in diameter)

Hazardous Waste

3rd Saturday of the Month, April to October, 2010
(April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, August 21, September 18, October 16)
  • Portland Transfer Station, Old Kingston Road, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
    (open to residents of the Township of Rideau Lakes and Westport Only!)

Also free electronics disposal on that day.

Recycling

Recycling collection is provided to all households in the Township. Collection will occur on all public roads.

Starting on the May long weekend (until Thanksgiving), curbside waste and recycling collection will be provided down most seasonal and private roads for the summer season. After Thanksgiving, private roads will again receive pickup at the nearest intersection of a public road until the following May. 

Recycling will occur weekly on a specific day (for most people the same day as your waste). You may place as many blue recycling bags out for pickup as required (no tags required). Recycling must be in transparent blue bags. Continue sorting your recycling as you currently do. Please put all cans and plastics in one bag, clear and coloured glass into one bag, and papers into a separate bag. Cardboard may be bundled beside your bags (you don’t have to put cardboard in a bag).

Items accepted for recycling:

  • plastics #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (this does not include plastic bags)
  • metal and aluminum cans
  • paper
  • boxboard and cardboard
  • clear glass (acceptable again beginning May 20, 2008)
  • newsprint
  • magazines and catalogues
  • telephone books
  • printer and copier paper
  • mail and office paper
