Municipal Waste Options Township of Rideau Lakes The Township has many other suggestions for waste reduction that are outlined on their new site: www.toogoodtowaste.ca. Please check there for up to date information. Trash to Treasures Day - Saturday, August 13, 2011. Set your free items in your front yard Sat. Aug. 13 for others to take. Remove them from your yard by Monday, August 15. Electronics - As of Saturday April 16, 201the Portland Landfill Site now accepts electronic waste year round, free of charge. A bin has been placed on site for electronic recycling. Electronic waste includes such things as computers, printers, fax machines, televisions, digital cameras, vcrs, stereos, radios, pagers, digital clocks…. Etc This does not include satellite, cable & digital transmitters & receivers or headphones/ear buds, home theatre image, audio & video equipment, glucose meters or hand held gaming systems. Check our website next week for a list of accepted and unaccepted items.
Waste and recycling collection is provided to all households in the Township. Collection will occur on public roads. See the website for private road collection. Pickup is for bagged household waste only. All bags must be tagged with a Rideau Lakes waste sticker and be in clear bags only. Residents will need to purchase their bag tags for $2.00 each in sheets of 10 at area outlets. Elgin - Gordanier Grocery, The Hub, Rideau Lakes Building Centre; Portland - Portland Grocery; Newboro - Library; Westport - Kudrinko’s Grocer, The Westport Hardware Store and Lower Mountain Merchantile; Chantry - Township Municipal Office; Delta - Delta Country Market Smiths Falls - Warring’s Independent Grocer and Bill’s Small Engine Repair There is a two bag limit for pickup per week. Please see website for garbage pickup schedules. The Township operates one landfill/transfer station site in Portland (on Old Kingston Road). Waste Site Hours: Wednesdays 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. , Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. See Rideau Lakes site for rates and other information. Reusable Bins: Containers for used but still usefull items are at the Portland Landfill site. Items left there are at the discretion of the attendant. Brush Coupons: One free coupon per year per household for a half ton truck load. Pick one up at the office or ask to have one mailed to you.

Recycling collection is provided to all households in the Township. Collection will occur on all public roads. Starting on the May long weekend (until Thanksgiving), curbside waste and recycling collection will be provided down most seasonal and private roads for the summer season. After Thanksgiving, private roads will again receive pickup at the nearest intersection of a public road until the following May. Recycling will occur weekly on a specific day (for most people the same day as your waste). You may place as many blue recycling bags out for pickup as required (no tags required). Recycling must be in transparent blue bags. Continue sorting your recycling as you currently do. Please put all cans and plastics in one bag, clear and coloured glass into one bag, and papers into a separate bag. Cardboard may be bundled beside your bags (you don’t have to put cardboard in a bag). Items accepted for recycling:
Free scrap metal recycling at the Portland Landfill Site, year round, in the metal bins provided, e.g. stoves, barbeques, bikes etc.
The Township offers backyard composters for $20 each at the office in Chantry. The first 200 composters sold in 2011 come with a ktichen compost collection container. There is a communal compost site at the Portland Landfill Site if you do not wish to backyard compost. Plastic bags must be emptied, paper bags are acceptable.
