World Record Walk

Thanks for helping Ontario set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of people walking one kilometer simultaneously.  We had a total of 100 walkers: 32 at Cornelia Court and 68 at Centennial Park.

Preliminary results are 134,100 walkers in Ontario and a Canada-wide total of 197,284. It will take about six weeks for Guinness to verify the submissions and give us the Ontario-wide total.

See some photos of the event.

How:

  • Meet at Centennial Park or Cornelia Court no later than 12:15 on Wednesday.
  • In Centennial Park, meet near the fountain. Route will be a circuit around the parks.
  • At Cornelia Court, meet near the grassed area on the northwest side of the complex. Walkers will do a marked circuit twice.
  • We need to document the number of participants so be prepared for a counting procedure and a group photo.
  • Everyone will start walking together at 12:30
  • A one kilometre route will be laid out.
  • It is expected to take about 20 minutes.
  • Official witnesses will submit letter confirming the walk took place.
  • REAL will submit official count form.

You can help!

  • come and walk on Wednesday, October 3
  • bring a friend or family member - almost everyone can walk
  • get your co-workers to come (carpool if you need to drive)
  • put up a poster at your workplace. We chose these locations so it would be easy to do on a lunch break for many area employees.
  • organize an event at your school or workplace
  • spread the word

Why? The Ontario World Record Walk is organized by Green Communities Canada with support from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion’s Communities in Action Fund. REAL is a member of Green Communities Canada. The Climate Change Action Team (CCAT) of REAL is taking this on to promote a culture of walking in Smiths Falls.

Other neat stuff:

  • The current record held by Western Australia with 100,915 participants in September 2006.
  • Other provinces are also participating: Alberta, which held the record in 2005, has already accepted the challenge, and so has British Columbia.
  • 900 events have been officially registered
  • Organizers are expecting 300,000 participants across Ontario
  • This coincides with International Walk to School Day
