What sort of volunteering opportunities are available?

Volunteers with the REAL Volunteers are involved in undertaking a range of duties to help protect the local natural environment. This includes: preparing and editing newsletters and press releases; planning and delivering information and fundraising events; planning and preparing exhibits; preparing graphics, brochures and displays; researching and writing and serving as a board member. What can I expect as a volunteer?

You can expect to be part of an organization that appreciates and values volunteer contributions and provides the support and training needed for people to be successful. You can also expect to share the skills you've developed and to develop new ones. You can expect to work with staff and volunteers who are dedicated to protecting the natural environment.

Do I have to volunteer for a specific number of hours per week or month?

You can volunteer for as many hours as you can spare.  There are volunteers who participate on an occasional project basis and others who volunteer regularly for years. There are volunteers who work in the REAL DEAL Store serving customers, those who give presentations and support during regular hours and those who volunteer nights and weekends to attend board meetings, raise funds, plant trees, pick up litter, etc. Time requirements vary by volunteer position. The Volunteer Co-ordinator will work with you to find opportunities that best fit your time availability, skills and needs.

What skills or qualifications do I need?

Skills and qualifications vary depending on the activities you would like to undertake. Training is provided to ensure volunteers have the skills and confidence they need to perform their duties.

What do you look for in a potential volunteer?

The REAL Volunteers want people who are enthusiastic, committed to protecting the natural environment and who are willing to promote the principles of each organization.

Do you have opportunities for young people to volunteer?

Yes. We encourage youth to be actively involved in protecting our environment. A variety of opportunities are available to help young people gain skills and give back to their local community.

REAL is located at 85 William St. W, Smiths Falls, approximately 40 minutes southwest of Ottawa.
