Home > Featured News > New Recycling Options in Ontario

You can now recycle more materials than ever before across Ontario, no matter where you live.

Some of the new materials included are:

  • Black plastic containers
  • Hot and cold beverage cups
  • Frozen juice containers
  • Ice cream tubs
  • Flexible plastics like plastic bags, chip bags, and bubble wrap
  • Foam packaging such as meat trays, takeout containers, and cups
  • Tubes like toothpaste, deodorant, and hand cream tubes

Books, be they soft or hard covered, are not longer accepted.

Circular Materials is a national not-for-profit organization that will be responsible for operating Ontario’s new recycling system for packaging and paper products.  It will be funded by the producers of packaging and paper products.

January 1, 2026 was the changeover date, and there will be some bumps before everything works as it should.  Your municipality is no longer responsible for recycling, so if you have problems or questions, you need to contact the whoever has been contracted in your area.  For example, Miller Waste Services (TOPPS) is handling the collection for the Town of Smiths Falls.  Unfortunately, commercial establishments are no longer eligible for the service and will have to make other arrangements.  If your recycling is picked up for you, your collection day may have changed, so check with your municipality.
